What Is Power-Only Trucking? A Shipper’s Guide

Power-only trucking is a service where a carrier supplies just the tractor and a driver to pull a trailer that someone else owns, leases, or provides. The “power” is the truck; the trailer (and usually the freight already loaded in it) belongs to the shipper, a leasing company, or another carrier. Power-only is widely used for drop-trailer programs, moving pre-loaded equipment, and covering capacity quickly without committing trailers.

How power-only works

In a normal full-truckload move, one carrier provides both the tractor and the trailer. In power-only, those are decoupled: the shipper has loaded trailers staged at a dock or yard, and a power-only carrier sends a tractor to hook up, haul the load, and drop the trailer at the destination. The driver then unhooks and moves on, often to pull another available trailer. This is the engine behind drop-and-hook and drop-trailer programs.

Power-only vs. standard FTL vs. drayage

Standard FTL bundles tractor and trailer from one carrier. Drayage specifically moves ocean containers on a chassis between ports and nearby facilities. Power-only is about supplying tractive power for trailers (or chassis) the carrier doesn’t own. In a port context, a carrier with its own equipment can flex between true drayage and power-only moves depending on what the customer needs.

When power-only makes sense

Power-only shines when a shipper already owns or leases trailers and wants to keep them loaded and ready, when a facility runs a high-volume dock that benefits from drop trailers, or when a company needs surge capacity without buying more equipment. It reduces driver wait time because trailers are pre-loaded, and it improves dock throughput because loading and transport are no longer locked together.

Why an asset-based carrier matters

Power-only depends on reliable tractors and dependable drivers showing up on schedule. A non-asset broker simply farms the move out to whoever is available, which can mean inconsistent service and an extra markup. Go Freight is an asset-based Miami 3PL with 100+ company-owned trucks and its own chassis pool, and we do not double-broker, so the tractor and driver you’re promised are the ones that arrive. Our AI-powered drayage and trucking platform predicts gate and yard timing at PortMiami and Port Everglades, which keeps power-only and drop-trailer moves on schedule. For storage and cross-docking around those moves, our 104,000 sq. ft. bonded warehouse can stage freight.

Frequently asked questions

What equipment does the shipper provide in power-only?

The shipper (or a leasing company) provides the trailer or chassis, usually already loaded. The carrier provides the tractor and a qualified driver to move it.

Is power-only cheaper than standard truckload?

It can be, because you’re paying only for the tractor and driver rather than tractor plus trailer, and drop trailers cut driver detention. Total savings depend on your trailer pool and dock efficiency.

Can power-only be used for ocean containers?

Yes. A carrier can supply power to pull a customer’s container on a chassis, though dedicated drayage with an owned chassis pool is often the better fit for port moves.
