An Air Waybill (AWB) is the contract of carriage and receipt for goods shipped by air. It is issued by the airline or its agent, travels with the cargo, and is non-negotiable — meaning it does not convey title and cannot be traded or endorsed the way an ocean bill of lading can. Whoever is named as consignee takes the cargo, full stop.
What an air waybill does
A single AWB performs four jobs at once:
- Contract of carriage between shipper and airline, incorporating the Montreal Convention liability terms.
- Receipt proving the airline accepted the goods in the stated condition and quantity.
- Freight bill, showing charges and whether they are prepaid or collect.
- Customs document, feeding the manifest data that customs authorities use to screen the shipment.
This is the key structural difference from ocean shipping. An ocean bill of lading can be a document of title; an AWB never is. Air cargo simply moves too fast for original documents to travel ahead of the goods.
Master air waybill vs house air waybill
Master air waybill (MAWB)
Issued by the airline to whoever tendered the cargo — typically a freight forwarder. It covers the entire consolidated shipment as one unit and carries the airline’s three-digit prefix followed by an eight-digit serial number, for example 001-12345675. The final digit is a check digit.
House air waybill (HAWB)
Issued by the forwarder to the individual shipper inside a consolidation. Each HAWB covers one customer’s cargo. The forwarder’s own numbering applies. Our explainer on house bill vs master bill covers the same relationship on the ocean side.
If you booked through a forwarder, the number you were given is almost certainly a HAWB. Tracking it on the airline’s website will fail — you need the MAWB for that.
Key fields to check before the cargo flies
AWB errors are expensive because the document is difficult to amend once the shipment is airborne. Verify these before tender:
- Shipper and consignee — exact legal names and addresses. Air cargo is released to the named consignee only.
- Airport codes — origin and destination, plus any transit points.
- Pieces, gross weight, chargeable weight — air freight bills on the greater of actual or volumetric weight. Review dimensional weight before you accept a quote.
- Nature and quantity of goods — must match the commercial invoice and packing list.
- Handling information — dangerous goods declarations, temperature requirements, known shipper status.
- Prepaid or collect — determines who the airline invoices.
AWBs for hazmat and special cargo
Dangerous goods add requirements on top of the AWB. The handling information box must reference the Shipper’s Declaration for Dangerous Goods, and the cargo must be packed, marked, and labeled to IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations. Lithium batteries in particular carry their own annually-updated packing instructions — see our summary of IATA lithium battery shipping rules. Miami shippers moving hazmat by air can review our hazmat logistics services for the DG documentation workflow.
Temperature-sensitive cargo, live animals, and human remains each carry their own AWB annotation requirements and airline acceptance checklists.
Air waybills at Miami International Airport
MIA is the largest international freight airport in the United States and the primary air gateway between the U.S. and Latin America, which makes AWB accuracy a daily operational issue for South Florida shippers. Cargo recovery at MIA runs on the MAWB — the airline warehouse releases against that number and the consignee’s identification, not the HAWB. If you are picking up yourself, see how airline cargo recovery at MIA works.
Go Freight is an asset-based Miami 3PL founded in 2004 with 100+ owned trucks, a TSA-approved bonded carrier authority, and a 104,000 sq ft bonded warehouse at 6901 NW 26 Ave — 15 minutes from the MIA cargo ramps.
Frequently asked questions
Is an air waybill negotiable like a bill of lading?
No. An AWB is always non-negotiable. It is not a document of title and cannot be endorsed or transferred, so cargo is released to the named consignee without surrendering an original document. If you need payment security on an air shipment, use a letter of credit or a bank as consignee rather than relying on the AWB.
How do I track an air waybill number?
Use the 11-digit master air waybill number on the airline’s cargo tracking site. If your forwarder gave you a house air waybill number, ask them for the corresponding MAWB — house numbers are internal to the forwarder and will not resolve on airline systems.
Can an air waybill be corrected after issue?
Minor corrections are possible before departure through a Cargo Correction Advice, but changes after the cargo is airborne are difficult and may require the airline’s approval and fees. Consignee changes in particular are heavily restricted once customs data has been transmitted.
