A Yard Management System (YMS) is software that tracks and orchestrates everything happening in a facility’s yard: which trailers and containers are parked where, which dock doors are free, what needs to move next, and how long each asset has been sitting. It covers the blind spot between the transportation management system (which ends at the gate) and the warehouse management system (which starts at the dock door).
What a YMS actually does
Gate check-in and check-out
Drivers are logged in at the gate — appointment verified, trailer or container number captured, condition noted — and assigned a parking spot or door. Digital check-in kills clipboard queues and creates the timestamps that settle driver detention disputes.
Yard inventory and spotting
The system maintains a live map of every trailer and container on the property, and builds task lists for the yard switcher: pull loaded trailer from door 14, stage empty at door 9, move reefer to a genset plug. Without a YMS, yard checks are manual walks that are out of date before they finish.
Dock scheduling and dwell alerts
A YMS ties dock appointments to real-time yard state, so doors are never double-booked and hot loads jump the queue. Dwell alarms flag containers approaching free-time expiry before they become per-diem charges, and reefer fuel or temperature checks get scheduled instead of remembered.
Why it matters for port-adjacent operations
Near a seaport, the yard is a pressure valve. Import containers pulled off terminal on pre-pulls wait in the yard for delivery appointments; empties wait for return slots; export loads stage ahead of vessel cutoffs.
